QCOSTARICA – More women seem to be heading or playing an important role in drug trafficking gangs.

Just this past Sunday an attempt was made on the life of Pamela Crespi, a replacement for famous Costa Rican drug trafficking gang by the jailed “El Indio”. And yesterday we learned that a Colombian woman, identified by her last name Enriquez Samudio, known as “Chava” and linked to a powerful Colombian drug cartel, was arrested in San Jose last week.

Enriquez fled Colombia in 2013.

Immigration records show she arrived in Costa Rica by way of Panama and remain illegal here until her capture, at which time then filed a request for political asylum, that was denied.

The woman’s capture was made possible by a joint operation between authorities in Costa Rica and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (Dijin) of Colombia.

“Alias ’Chava’ illegally entered Costa Rica from Panama. She sought to evade Colombian judicial actions since 2013, and once arrested she brought a political action to avoid being deported, however, the request was denied by Costa Rica,” said the National Police of Colombia in an official statement.

Enriquez is suspected of coordinating the flow of cocaine from Colombia’s laboratories in the Valle del Cauca (Cali), for packing and shipping to Central America, with North America as a final destination.

It is unknown if the woman was a leader in the drug cartel known as “La Cordillera”, with links to Costa Rican drug trafficking group responsible for providing the Colombians with support and movement of drugs to other regions in the continent. What is known is Enriquez played an important role in the cartel’s drug operations.

“She was immediately deported to Colombia by Interpol to answer for the crimes of trafficking, manufacturing and possession of drugs and conspiracy,” said the Colombian police report.
