Women’s Group Warns Hurricane Otto Will Increase Violence Against Women

TICO BULL by Rico – What is totally bull is the message posted on Crhoy.com by Yaslin Cabezas on the call by the Acción Estratégica por los Derechos Humanos (Acceder) – Strategic Action for Human Rights – organization, saying that “Hurricane Otto will not only affect the country with heavy rains, unfortunately, domestic violence and sexual violence against women could also increase”.

The Acceder said in  a statement that the eminent future effects of the hurricane include the “differential impact of socio-environmental disaster as potentiator of existing vulnerabilities”.

I do not know exactly what “journalist” Yaslin Cabezas meant to say, but what I get from the message is that, basically, the hurricane must be reported to INAMU (women’s institute) for violence against women. And that we must distribute emergency contraceptives for the hurricane?

What the BULL?

In my humble opinion, the Acceder’s message is very clear: promote all possible HATE towards men.

I never thought I could read something so stupid, blaming a hurricane for violence against women.

Yes, there is a problem in the country, a problem of continued “machismo” that often leads to violence and physical abuse of women.

According to statistics of the Judiciary  (Poder Judicial) indicate that, in Costa Rica, in the last 10 years, sexist violence has cost the lives of more than 400 women, and the INEC (census) data indicate that, on average, there are 500 child births a year by young girls of between 10 and 14 years of age who were raped.

A survey conducted in 2015 by the Ombudsman’s Office on sexual harassment showed that 6 out of 10 women reported being victims of street sexual harassment (acoso sexual en la calle in Spanish).

But to blame a hurricane for an increase in violence against women? It is clear that the Acceder is an organization where it know no longer what or where to grasp.
