Stepfather of 11 year old girl who gave birth at home ordered to preventive detention

QCOSTARICA — The Criminal Court of Pococí ordered 6 months of preventive detention (remand) against the suspect of raping an 11-year-old girl who gave birth in her home in Guácimo, Limón.

The judiciary confirmed this Friday, identifying the man, the child’s stepfather, with the last name León.

León was arrested in the morning along with the mother of the 11-year-old girl, however, she was released.

“In this case, a woman is also listed as accused and was ordered released,” indicated the Judiciary.

In addition, it added that the Public Ministry did not appeal the decision, and the only appeal filed is the defense of the accused.

On Wednesday around 5:00 p.m., the minor gave birth in the bathroom of her house, and the relatives alerted the authorities.

Minutes later, the baby died, as confirmed by the Costa Rican Red Cross and the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) – the Judicial Investigation Agency.
