QCOSTARICA – The Consejo Nacional de Salarios (National Wages Council) confirmed the government’s proposal that the wage adjustment for private sector employees, for the first half of 2016,  will be 0.67% that will take effect on January 1.

In real terms, the raise is ¢670 colones per ¢100,000 colones of salary.

Domestic workers (ie. maids) receive and addition 0.33%.

The increase will affect the some 900,000 workers in the private sector and only mandatory for workers earning the legal minimum wage.

The private sector worker’s unions had lobbied for an increase of between 2.% and 7%.

The existing methodology for calculating salary adjustments for employees in the private sector was approved in 2011. “
