QCOSTARICA – A 44 year-old man, identified by his last name Padilla Herrera, was on Tuesday severely beaten by a group of women during his attack on his latest victim of rape.

Herrera is suspected of being the Heredia serial rapist in the area of Añoranzas, in Los Ángeles de San Rafael, in Heredia.

Wearing a balaclava and a cap to avoid being recognized, he would threaten a group of women with a handgun, would then force one to take off her underwear and proceeded raped her. Depending on the version of the witnesses, in some cases, he is presumed to force his victims to perform certain sexual acts in front of the others, threaten the crowd with killing his victim if anyone tried to stop him.

His latest victim, realizing the handgun was not a real, called out to the crowd to defend her and themselves by attacking the man. The beating was such that the man had to be hospitalized after being rescued by police who were called to the scene.

According to the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ)  in Heredia, the victims all filed a complaint with in Heredia.

The man, who is now in custody, apparently also has a history of sexual abuse of minors and is suspected in at least four other similar rapes starting with the first complained filed last August.

The OIJ is asking other victims to come forward and file complaints.
