Q COSTA RICA NEWS – Today Wednesday, December 21, is expected to be a record day for traffic congestion with the TOTAL CLOSURE of the Alajuela (airport) – San Jose bound of autopista General Cañas at the Virilla (platina) bridge.
The closure began at 6:00am this morning and will continue until 6:00am Thursday.
Despite school is out and many business are already closed for the holidays, the closure is expected to cause nightmare traffic congestion on the autopista itself and alternate routes, such as the Heredia to La Uruca and the Ruta 27.
According to the app Waze, traffic on the General Cañas this morning, before 6:00am, was already a mess, most likely many heading into San Jose ahead of the planned closure.
The road closure is part of the process of expansion of the bridge, allowing crews to install truss components, says the Ministry of Transport (MOPT).
Another closure will run on Monday, December 26, between 10:00pm and 5:00am Tuesday 27; and Tuesday, December 27, from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
In all cases, San Jose bound truck traffic will be diverted at the EPA store (just past the Bridgestone plant), while all other vehicles must leave the autopista at La Castella.
Drivers who choose the EPA detour will have the choice of the route to La Valencia (left turn at the interesection) to La Uruca and back onto the autopista; or, a right to turn to Belen, to Lindora and onto the ruta 27 to San Jose.
Best is not to be on the roads into or from San Jose today, for the closure will certainly affected the Ruta 27, the Alajuela and Occidente, and the Rio Segundo to San Joaquín de Flores, to Heredia that leads to La Valencia and La Uruca.
