Canada Downs Costa Rica; Advances to Olympic Qualifying Final

QCOSTARICA SPORTS – Canada (ranked 11th), downed Costa Rica (ranked 34th) in the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship with a 3-1 win at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas on Friday, February 19, 2016.

The Canadians also qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.

Forward and team captain Christine Sinclair scored the first two goals for Canada. Deanne Rose added the third goal. Costa Rica score was by forward Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno.

The Canadian win was their fourth of the tournament, after sweeping the opposition in Group B action in Houston. In their first game on February 11, they downed Guyana 5-0; following that up with 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on February 14. They closed out group action with a 10-0 victory over Guatemala.

Canada will face United States (ranked 1st) in the second semi-final game, on Sunday, February 21, 2016.  Game time is set for 4 p.m. (Costa Rica time) at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
