TODAY COLOMBIA | Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced Thursday that his government will invest more money to allow expanded free university education once a peace deal with rebels is reached.

There would be sufficient resources and all the money used for war would be invested in education if the peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is achieved, Santos said in a speech at the National University Auditorium.

Although many other sectors are in need of investment, education has always been a priority, he added.

The Colombian government has held several rounds of peace talks with FARC since November 2012. So far the two sides have agreed on land and rural development, political participation for former rebels, fight against drug trafficking, and reparations for victims of the conflict.

The two sides hope to reach a final accord by March 23 to put an end to the five-decade-old armed conflict.
