Q COSTA RICA – A free App (application) for the early detection of earthquakes was released for Android users in Costa Rica by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of the National University (Ovsicori-UNA) and the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias  (CNE) – National Emergency Commission.

The App has three kinds of alerts: red, orange, and green.

The Red alert, its creators explained, will take control of the user’s phone and sound the alarm, vibrate, display a text message, and emits the voice message at maximum volume “earthquake, earthquake, earthquake”,  while orange and green alerts will just vibrate and send notifications.

The creators say they are working on the iOS version for Apple devices.

Costa Rica is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where 90 percent of all the world’s earthquakes and 80 percent of the largest earthquakes occur.

UPDATED: Here is a link to the app. I had not included in the initial post, my computer did not download it for a “potential security risk”.

You can also get the app at the Ovsicori Facebook page.
