Costa Rica reports negative inflation for the fourth consecutive year

Q COSTA RICA — In June 2026, Costa Rica recorded its fourth consecutive year of negative year-on-year inflation at the end of the first half of each period.

For the period from July 2025 to June of this year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached a year-on-year change of -0.32%.

Furthermore, inflation between January and June 2026, also known as accumulated inflation, closed at 0.08%, while the monthly change was 0.71%.

The goods and services with the greatest impact on the monthly change in the CPI were transportation, recreation, sports, and culture.

Of the 289 goods and services that make up the CPI, 51% increased in price, 31% decreased in price, and 18% showed no change, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).

Finally, the goods and services that showed the greatest positive effect on the monthly change in the CPI were gasoline, bus transportation, and international tour packages. On the other hand, eggs, diesel, and chicken breast were among those with the greatest negative effect on the monthly change.
