COSTA RICA NEWS — Authorities Monday morning closed the Parque Nacional Volcán Poás (Poas Volcano National Park) after the volcano recorded a phreatic eruption that exceed 250 metres (800 feet) high, according to the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica ( Ovsicori).

Raul Mora, volcanologist at the National Seismological Network (RSN), said the material and ash reached the visitor centre and parking area. The guards had to pull tourists who were on the site, the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – national emergency commission – closed the park to all visitors.

According OVSICORI, phreatic eruptions occur very quickly (in less than 5 or 10 seconds) and without any prior notice.
The cycle of phreatic activity at the Poás began in March 2005.
