OECD criticizes ‘penalization’ of motherhood in Costa Rica

The gender gap widens when women are mothers, low-income, with low education and live in rural areas.

In Costa Rica, women of all ages suffer a “motherhood penalty” that forces them to leave their studies or jobs. The system is not designed so that they can overcome if they decide to have children, an analysis by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) concluded.
