(QCOSTARICA) MONTREAL, Quebec — A first World Cup game, first World Cup goals and, ultimately, first World cup points for Spain and Costa Rica, though there is no doubt which of these two sides is happier about Tuesday’s 1-1 draw.

Costa Rica fell behind on a Vicky Losada goal — a low placed shot into the corner after a well-executed turn in the box — in the 13th minute, and with Spain boasting the playmaking talent of Veronica Boquete, the Ticas might have expected to endure a long afternoon under siege.

Instead, Costa Rica was level within 76 seconds, on a route one counter, and spent the rest of the game looking more than capable of scoring on the counter again, with Spain’s defensive vulnerabilities on display.

The Ticas did have to soak up a fair amount of pressure as Spain adjusted in the second half, but despite some smart approach play and some great looks at goal, Spain missed its chances to put away its fellow debutantes and must now face Brazil without a win in what should, on paper, have been its easiest game.
