COSTA RICA BLOG – I have been following the rise of Luis Guillermo Solís, now president, in the media and not once have I ever heard him utter a word of English.
So, it was with great surprise, though I admit I shouldn’t be, to hear him, in English, interviewed by TMZ Sports in Washington D.C.
I suppose my surprise is not that he can speak English, but much better than his predecessors.

PS. sorry for the title, I couldn’t resist going back to my roots, as a youngster in Canada listening to Italians ah speek da inglish!
I knew that President Solis spent years in the US studying, but I hadn’t heard him speak, either. I was surprised on viewing these interviews at how well he speaks English – his English is very fluid, with no word-finding problems and only a mild accent.
He studied abroad, he was a Fulbright scholar and worked at Florida International University.
