QCOSTARICA – Three men were arrested Monday night in Tajercillos, Alajuelita, on the south side of San Jose, for alleged extortion, right out the ‘wiseguys‘ of the American mafia playbook.

The three men, residents of Alajuelita, apparently charged their neighbours not to assault them.

The men would demand ¢2.000 colones (US$4) from informal (pirate) taxis and up to ¢20.000 colones (US$38) from business owners and area residents, in exchange for “protection”.

Agents of the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ) say the three formed a criminal gang in the area, terrorizing residents and businesses. Two of the three had priors.

The OIJ said there are at least eight formal complaints filed against three and making a call on others to come forward.
