Leaving Costa Rica by way of the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), known as the San Jose Airport, means long waits to your fight. Rules at the airport require check-in at the airline counter of at least one hour, though most airlines recommend two and even up to three hours.
At peak travel hours, you will most likely spend most of that time in line, if not at the airline counter given you have already pre-checked in or have no bags, Your VIP status means nothing at the police control and personal inspection. During other hours, from airline counter to gate can be less than 20 minutes.
The waiting areas of the terminal are quite comfortable. There is WiFi, shops and eateries. But if you want to take advantage of the downtime (waiting) to catch on work and social media nothing beats the VIP lounge.
There are three at the SJO: the VIP Lounge BAC Credomatic at Gates 19-20, the VIP lounge Costa Rica at Gate 5, lower level and the Santamaria VIP at Gate 5 upper level.
What’s the difference? Let’s look at all three.
