When does the sharp increase fuel price increase take effect?

Q COSTA RICA — Costa Rica’s newly approved fuel-price increase will take effect after the resolution is published in the official government gazette, La Gaceta.

Given that the adjustment was approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)—Public Services Regulatory Authority—and submitted on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the exact date of implementation depends on this administrative process, which typically takes a few days.

As of today, Friday, October 30, the exact publication and start date has not been confirmed.

Under the announced timetable, the higher prices begin at midnight on the day of publication, so drivers should check for the notice before heading to the pump.

Once the new prices are officially published, they will be as follows:

  • Regular gasoline: Increases by ¢89 (from ¢719 to ¢808)
  • Super gasoline: Increases by ¢42 (from ¢764 to ¢806)
  • Diesel: Increases by ¢23 (from ¢785 to ¢808)
  • Gas cylinder (25lbs,  most commonly used in homes across the country): Increases by ¢549 (from ¢7,172 to ¢7,721)

A notable detail this month is that regular gasoline will end up costing ¢2 more per liter than super gasoline, due to the price trends of international shipments purchased by the Refinadora Costarricense de Petroleo (RECOPE)—the Costa Rican refinery that refines nothing.
