QCOSTARICA — The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) reported Sunday afternoon responding to 180 traffic accidents, 56 water-related accidents, 19 acts of violence, ie attacks with a knife or gun, 111 trama incidents, and 21 intoxications, among others, during Semana Santa.

These incidents resulted in the death at the scene of 47 people during the holiday week. The  figure does not include the deaths in medical centers following the incidents

The number is up from 40 deaths during the same period in 2023.

In total, the Red Cross reported treating 493 people of whic 282 people were taken to hospital (59 in critical condition) following the incidents.

Among the traffic accidents was the head-on collision involving a tractor-trailer, a truck and a passenger vehicle on the Interamerican Norte (Ruta 1), in the area of Barranca, at the Naranjito bridge, Saturday morning.

 

The incident resulted in one death and several injuries, shutting down the road, in both directions, for hours.
