Q COSTA RICA — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck at 1:37 a.m. this Monday, August 24, according to a preliminary report from the Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN) — National Seismological Network.
Two minutes later, at 1:39 a.m., the second tremor occurred. This one reached a magnitude of 4.8 and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake strongly shook Costa Rica’s Central Valley. On social media, users report that the tremor was prolonged in San José (Pavas, San Pedro, San Sebastián, Desamparados, Escazú, Santa Ana), Alajuela, Heredia, Guadalupe, and Sabanilla de Montes de Oca, Cartago, as well as in Turrialbla and Buenos Aires de Puntarenas
The epicenter was located 11 km north of Cascajal de Vázquez de Coronado, at a depth of 7 kilometres.
A total of 23 significant aftershocks have occurred between 1:37 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., confirmed by Lepolt Linkimer, the coordinating researcher of the RSN, in statements to Telenoticias.
The National Emergency Commission (CNE) and local responders confirmed minor infrastructure impact
No injuries or casualties have been reported from the event.
