Andrea Vargas gets the first gold for Costa Rica in the Central American and Caribbean Games

Andrea Vargas won the first gold medal for Costa Rica at the Central American and Caribbean Games (Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 2018) in Barranquilla, Colombia, on Tuesday afternoon.

The native of Puriscal stopped the clock in 12:90 in the final of the 100 yards hurdles.

On Monday afternoon, Vargas won her semifinal and went to the final of the 100 yards hurdles, which was the best time, to stop the clock in 12:75.

This is the first gold medal for the country. In total, Costa Rican athletes have amassed 24 medals: 6 silver, 17 bronze, and one gold.

The Puriscaleña is 22 years old and the mother of two. She has been competing since she was 9.

Reports of the ESPN network, which broadcasts the games, praised the performance of the Tica.

Mexico is in first place with 112 gold medals, followed by Cuba with 66 and Colombia in third with 60. Costa Rica is in 13th place.

The 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games began on July 19 and run to August 3, with a total of 5,854 athletes from 37 nations participating in 470 events.
