rumano-Avianca-Juan_Santamaria_LNCIMA20150225_0102_5QCOSTARICA – The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) is investigating a case of possible suicide of a passenger on an Avianca flight from Bogota, Colombia to San José, Costa Rica.

The judicial police confirmed the body of the man was found in the rear bathroom of the aircraft.

According to the airport police (Policía Aeroportuaria) and Aeris Holding Costa Rica, the airport manager, the man is a 53 year-old Romanian national, and travelling with a 35 year-old woman, also Romanian.

The OIJ reported that according to the preliminary versions by the woman, her travelling companion was nervous, going the bathroom several times during the flight. She said that at some point during the flight she fell asleep, waking up five minutes before landing, when she realized the man was longer beside her. She went to the bathroom to check on him, finding lifeless after getting help from the flight attendant to open the locked door.

Through a press release, the airline said the Romanian was on flight LR697, landing at the Juan Santamaria airport at 9:05am.

Update: Feb. 26, 6:12am – The OIJ confirms the man committed suicide, using a belt to hang himself.
