Incidents like that occurring last week get little media attention. Normally news stories report all the bad things happening. At the Q we thought this a typical bad story that turned good, when an 18-year-old bus passenger risked his life to capture a robber who brandished a .38 caliber pistol on the bus and stole three cell phones. With the help of other persons, the robber was pursued for 30 minutes and held for police.

“This guy sitting in the back of the bus gets up, draws a gun and points it at the riders,” the young hero told La Nacion, “Without saying a word, he takes the cell phones, first from two girls, then from me, sitting near the door.”

“This caused a tumult back there and the driver opened the door. I don’t know if he knew it was a robbery but when the robber jumped out, I followed him,” the young hero continued. (His name was not released due to fear of reprisal.)

The Ipis de Goicoechea to San Jose bus was then passing through El Alto, Goicoechea. “I followed him for 300 metres when he ran into a house after he saw I was following. He came out of the house and stopped a (light cargo) truck and got in. I stopped a taxi and told the driver to follow him.”

The taxi driver used his cell to call 911, which mobilized the Goicoechea and Morasvia police. When the truck let out the robber in San Vicente de Moravia, police said the robber still carried his gun in his hand. Then began a merry chase over back fences, between stores.

Several people told the hero where the route the robber had taken exited and they young man circled the block and intercepted the robber with the aid of a motorcyclist. The robber, by now desperate, tried to hail a taxi but the driver, alerted by the cries of pursuers, turned off his engine.

It was in the parking lot of the Megasuper where police cornered the 34-year-old gunman and relieved him of his pistol, which was loaded with five shells. Cops also found the two cell phones taken from the girls on the bus — but not the 18-year-old hero’s phone, despite his extraordinary efforts.
