Q COSTA RICA — A 62-year-old man identified by the surname Mata was arrested in San Isidro del General, in Pérez Zeledón, on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor.
Investigators allege he approached children and teenagers in public places—including parks, plazas and areas hosting sports activities—and invited them to a hotel where they could use its facilities and video games.
Agents from the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) Pérez Zeledón regional office arrested the man during a search of the hotel on November 4. The investigation began in October after authorities received a complaint. The OIJ said that an alleged sexual assault occurred during one of the man’s encounters with minors.
Investigators searched the hotel and seized electronic devices and other items they consider potentially relevant to the case. The material will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. After his arrest, Mata was placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry, which will determine the next legal steps.
The allegations describe a pattern investigators are examining: contact in public settings, an invitation to a hotel, and the offer of games and access to facilities. But the reported details remain preliminary.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether there are other potential victims or whether they will seek precautionary measures.
