Q COSTA RICA — A 38-year-old Costa Rican man with the surname Fernández was arrested in La Plata, Argentina, on October 23. He is suspected of patrimonial violence in a case involving more than ¢18 million colones (US$39,000) allegedly taken from a company he co-owned with his romantic partner, according to a report by La Nación.
Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) investigators say the money was allegedly taken in 2025. Preliminary information indicates Fernández then traveled to Argentina. Costa Rican authorities issued an international arrest warrant and an Interpol Red Notice as they sought to locate him.
The arrest followed coordination between Interpol offices in San José and Argentina. The OIJ said its investigators worked to establish Fernández’s whereabouts and exchanged information with Argentine counterparts through the Pacto 2.0 program, which supports cooperation against transnational organized crime. He is awaiting extradition to Costa Rica.
Analysis
The case shows how allegations involving business funds can quickly cross borders when a suspect leaves the country.
Here, Costa Rica’s request and Interpol cooperation helped authorities locate and arrest the man in Argentina. The accusation remains an allegation: the information reported so far does not establish that Fernández was convicted or that a court has determined what happened to the money.
The next key step is extradition, which would allow the case to proceed before Costa Rican authorities.
