An early morning accident on the autopista General Cañas provides more proof of the dangerous roads in Costa Rica.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 200 metres northeast of the Plaza Real Cariari, when a 30 year old woman lost control her vehicle and instead of being saved by the guardrail, the same impaled the vehicle.
The woman (driver) survived the accident, suffering serious injuries and is recovering in hospital. Even more, the young man travelling with the woman in the passenger seat, suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Cruz Roja paramedics. He did not require hospitalization.
Traffic police said they cannot rule out speeding.
The section of the autopista between Virilla (Platina) bridge and the Plaza Cariari is a high speed straightway for many motorists and the scene of numerous serious and fatal accidents. On this section of road, many a pedestrian prefer to dash across speeding traffic rather than use the overpasses.
