QCOSTARICA — Costa Rica just came off a long weekend, because of the April 11 holiday being moved to Monday, leaving five mandatory pay (Statutory) holidays in 2024, and three non-payment holidays.

The mandatory pay holidays are:

  • Wednesday, May 1 – Día del trabajador (Labor Day)
  • Thursday, July 25 – Annexation of Guanacaste (moved to Monday, July 29)
  • Thursday, August 15 – The mother of all holidays in Costa Rica, Dia de la Madre (Mother’s Day)
  • Sunday, September 15 – Día de la Independencia (Independence Day)
  • Wednesday, December 25 – Navidad (Christmas Day)

For all the foregoing holidays, employees are paid double their normal salary if asked to work. Important to note that employees are not obliged to work on holidays unless they agree, irrespective if the employer is national or international.
