QCOSTARICA – Hundreds of protesters from civil society took to the streets of San Jose Saturday morning to protest against the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (Recope), in the march called “Ya No Mas Recope!”.
At least four blocks of Paseo Colon, in the capital city, were full of people marching peacefully towards the Plaza de la Democracia.
The march began at 10:00am, ending in the vicinity of the Legislative Assembly, where organizers proclaimed their discomfort with the public company that exclusively imports and distributes fuel in Costa Rica.

Obviously an agency that raises prices while its costs drop dramatically has problems, but I would like to hear just what is Recope and what do the people suggest as an alternative. During my years in CR, I have never seen protests such as exist since Solis took the reins.
There needs to be more protests like this one to set the record straight. RECOPE, as a State institution, exists to benefit a few at the expense of many. In most circumstances, RECOPE answers only to itself in the decision making process, much the same as ICE, the State electrical and telecommunication’s institution. These are both good examples of State monopolies “gone wild”, at the expense of the ordinary citizens of Costa Rica.
…so what is the answer? Free Enterprise? Is that posible in CR?
Yes, ban State monopolies and open the markets to a true free enterprise system.
