Two Jamaican brothers were arrested Saturday for setting up a call center in Costa Rica allegedly to defraud seniors in the United States. According to the investigation, the economic damage caused by the brothers, surnamed Levy, amounts to US$350,000 dollars.
The arrest was made by agents of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) in Ciudad Colón (San José) and Alajuela, following an arrest warrant issued by the International Police (Interpol).
“Apparently, the suspects had a call center in our country, from which they contacted US citizens, mostly seniors, who were told they had won a grand cash prize.
“Next, they were told that in order for them to receive the bonus they had to deposit a certain amount of money through cash delivery companies, with the aim of covering the insurance of the prize won, being that, people made deposits and but never received the prize,” explained the Judicial Police through a press release.
The suspects used software that made victims believe that calls were being made from Washington D.C. and not from Costa Rica.
The brothers now are awaiting extradition to the United States.
