Traffic westbound out of downtwon San josé to La Sabana was a nightmare Sunday afternoon. Affected also were the Ruta 27, the autopista General Cañas and the Circunvalación.

QCOSTARICA – The area around La Sabana park was a complete traffic nightmare Sunday afternoon, with the closure of the Sabana norte, traffic was diverted onto the Sabana Sur, backing up in both directions from several kilometres.

The other closures also included Paseo Colon, the Pavas main drag and Rohrmoser boulevard.

The closures were due to the Maratón de San José (San José Marathon) that began at 1:00pm, with the first place finishers coming in to the home stretch in front of the national stadium at 5:00pm.

Many drivers questions the lack of coordination and planning by the Policia de Transito (traffic police).

Others were caught by surprise, saying “I knew nothing of the marathon, had I known I would have taken another route. I a coming from Cartago headed to Alajuela and have over 40 minutes of being in the middle of the dam,” Randall Gonzalez told the Q.

A trip from Plaza Mayor to the Gymnasio Nacional (national gym) located at the southeast corner of La Sabana park, took about 35 minutes at 4:50pm. The trip on a Sunday afternoon takes less than 7 minutes.

It wasn’t until about 6:00pm when all the Policia de Transito began removing all the barriers and traffic started to return to normal.
