COSTA RICA NEWS — The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) – national roads authority, reported this afternoon that the road between San Carlos and the Arenal dam is closed following a landslide Sunday afternoon.

The closure is on Ruta 143, two kilometres (a little over a mile) before the dam and La Unión de Tilarán.

David Meléndez, director of emergencies at the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) explained that the landslide swept nearly both lanes of the two lane road.

The official said that machinery has been on site to clear the debris, but heavy rains have stopped work on several occasions.

“No one can say how long we will take because the progress of the work depends on the weather situation, I can only say that we are working in the area,” said the MOPT official.

Alternate routes are Ruta 747, a gravel road, before Neuvo Arenal that leads to Guatuso, then onto Ruta 4 that goes to La Fortuna de San Carlos.
