QCOSTARICA – More than cars were being washed at car washes in Curridabat and Los Yoses (in San Jose), according to the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) after raids on the locations and the house of one the person under investigation on Friday, arresting the alleged leader of the money laundering gang in Costa Rica.

The OIJ says the gang is also linked to drug trafficking.

The investigation arose from a request by French authorities, requesting the capture of several people on charges of money laundering.

The leader of the organization, a Colombian national was arrested by Interpol in Panama, though he escaped custody shortly after being detained.

Authorities say the proceeds from drug trafficking was invested in the car washes.
