Six Months Preventive Detention For Lebanese Linked To Shooting In Escazú

Ziad Akl faces charges of attempted murder, extortion, aggravated deprivation of liberty and violation of domicile commited in Costa Rica. He also wanted in Canada.

Q COSTA RICA – Ziad Akl, the brother of Elias Akl who was killed in Monday morning’s shootout in Guachipelin, has been ordered by the Pavas Criminal Court to six months preventive detention.

The court appearance took place on Wednesday at 10:00am.

Akl was detained on Monday afternoon at the Juan Santamaria International airport (San Jose airport) attempting to leave the country, on a flight headed to New York, using a false Canadian passport.

At first the prosecutor’s office (Fiscalia) requeste three months detention; however, for security reasons, Akl was moved to a different court, where the judge orderd the six months detention for the crimes of attempted murder, extortion, aggravated deprivation of liberty and violation of domicile.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Organismo de Investigacion Judicia (OIJ) and the Prosecutor’s Office raided the Lebanese’s home, as well as a gym and offices owned by the Akl brothers.

On Monday morning in front of the Mount View school Elias Akl was assassinated after being ambushed by assassins.

The OIJ attributes the murder to a settlement of scores, although they did not reveal the links to what criminal activity.
