QCOSTARICA – Activity at the Turrialba volcano continued yesterday with two new emissions of ash and gas, the first at 2:45 pm and then again at 3:04 pm.
The incident was recorded by the cameras of the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVISCOIRI) – Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica.
Turrialba Volcano National Park officials confirmed falling material in the vicinity of the currently active crater.
María Martínez, OVSICORI volcanologist, said that the eruptions were of small quantities of gas and ash, but enough to cause a grey cloud of smoke over the crater.
“Following the recent eruptions, the western side of the crater eroded and material fell into the ashes released today (yesterday).”
The expert said seismographs of the OVSICORI recorded seismic activity during the eruption, and did not rule out further activity in the coming days.
Since March 13, the Turrialba has erupted 14 times, mostly small eruptions after the big one on March 12, and the reason for the constant monitoring.
