QCOSTARICA — Starting this week, Uber use will have to provide a pin to the driver when starting a trip, to reinforce safety on the routes, as confirmed by the platform.

The trip can only be started once the driver partner enters the correct code, while users will be able to verify this step from the application, receiving a confirmation in real-time.

This process had already been implemented, but optionally.

“It is essential that users verify that the photo of the driving partner, as well as the model, make and license plate number of the vehicle, match the data provided in the application,” indicated Manuela Bedoya, safety communications manager at Uber for the Andean region, the Caribbean and Central America.

Here’s how it works:

  • Once you’ve been matched with a ride, you’ll see a PIN below your ETA status
  • On arrival, your driver should ask you for the PIN
  • If the PIN is correct, you’re all good to start your trip
  • If the number doesn’t match, the driver will be unable to start the trip.

Other security measures

  • Share the trip with up to five trusted contacts
  • Option to call 911 directly from the app in case of emergency
  • Record audio during a trip and share it with the support team in case you feel in an uncomfortable situation
  • Availability of RideCheck technology, which detects anomalies during the trip and offers options to address them
