Valentine’s day is more than just about love and romance, it is also about friendship. And as such the day is called  the “El dia Del Amor y la Amistad” (love and friendship day)

The celebration goes beyond couples and lovers exchange gifts, chocolates, cards and flower bouquets,  friends and family exchanging messages with is common in Costa Rica.

As with many traditions there are varying stories on why and when Valentines Day began to be celebrated.

Celebrations in bars and discos are also common. A romantic sunset can be the perfect setting for couples visiting the beaches and resorts around the country.

For some, however,  this year celebrating the day is tough economically, given the  rising costs of getting children back to school – uniforms, school supplies, notebooks, etc. as money just doesn’t go that far anymore.
