Q COSTA RICA — Due to reduced traffic during the mid-term school break in San José and increased volume on the road to the beaches and mountains, the traffic police announced the suspension of the vehicle restriction for the entire holiday period.
This means the measure went into effect on Monday, July 6th, and will return on Monday, July 20th.
This will allow the redirection of traffic police resources to handle roadside enforcement duties typical of the holiday season, such as speeding and improper passing, two of the major causes of accidents on the country’s highways.
The license plate restriction applies in the area inside the Circunvalación (ring road) and all streets within that perimeter, with the exception of the section of Circunvalación Norte (northern ring road) between the Calle Blancos intersection and the La Uruca interchange (near the former Burger King).

Normally, the vehicular restrictions of San José apply on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays), as follows:
- Mondays: license plates ending in 1 & 2
- Tuesdays: license plates ending in 3 & 4
- Wednesdays: license plates ending in 5 & 6
- Thursdays: license plates ending in 7 & 8
- Fridays: license plates ending in 9 & 0
The Fine for violation is ¢26,070 colones for each occurrence.
