COSTA RICA NEWS (La Nacion) – The Fiscalía de Fraudes y el Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) – Fraud Prosecutor and Judicial Agents – on Thursday arrested a notary and a translator related to land fraud in the canton of San Carlos, in the province of Alajuela.

Detained was Gabriela Alejandré Sáenz, 44, at her home in  San Juan de La Unión, Cartago and Jaime Jarquín Zárate, 50, a resident of Pataste de Guatuso, in Alajuela.

Authorities were not able to locate the Italian, Michele Popeo, who is tied to the same fraud involving 20 properties in San Carlos. Authorities are also looking for Gerardo Daniel Contreras Ramírez, a Costa Rican whose name appears in a number of documents related to the alleged scam.

The fraud involves a total of 527 hectares of land.

Authorities also raided the home of notary Rubén Rojas Castillo, at his home in Heredia where a number of registration acts were performed. Castillo was not detained after telling authorities that unknown persons has stolen his notary paper and security forms, which were alleged to be used to commit the registration fraud.
