According to 911, on Saturday (July 5) there were 445 calls for domestic violence. The women’s institute, the Instituto Nacional de la Mujer (Inamu), says the average daily is around 100.

The same occurred on Sunday, June 29, following the Costa Rica – Greece game, when the 911 reports having received 486 calls for domestic violence.

According to the Ministreo de Seguridad Publica (MSP), Celso Gamboa, the situation is worrisome. Gamboa says that the MSP will continue to reinforce its awareness campaigns, with the goal of eradicating this social ill.

The INAMU says that calls from battered women during the first half of the year has increased 11% over the same period last year.
