A hit to the wallet: Fuel prices to rise by up to ¢89 in November

Q COSTA RICA — Fuel prices will rise again in November, according to preliminary data submitted by the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope), the state refinery that refines nothing, to the regulatory authority on Friday, October 9.

The Recope estimates that regular gasoline will see the largest increase—¢89—bringing the price to ¢808 per liter; Super gasoline is expected to rise by ¢42, reaching ¢806; Diesel is expected to increase by ¢31, which would set the price per liter at ¢816.

LPG gas and other fuels will also see an increase. For example, a 25-pound (11.34 kg) cylinder of LPG, the most commonly used in homes across the country for indoor and outdoor household kitchens, would reach ¢7,719, reflecting an increase of ¢547.

Recope attributes these price changes to the crisis in the Middle East, risks along oil transport routes, and a decline in global reserves.

Not if, but when approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP), after a review to determine the final price adjustments, the hike will take effect in the first few days of November.
