A 53year-old construction will spend the next 24 years in prison for having committed five sexual abuse and six rapes against two little girls.

According to the Deputy Prosecutor of Cartago, the man identified by his lastname Araya and the “abuelastro” – stepgrandfather (father or mother of a stepfather or stepmother) took advantage of the young girls, sisters, as well as living with them to make their lives a hell.

The events occurred between 2017 and 2018, during which time the family was renting houses in San Nicolás, San Rafael de Oreamuno and in the Manuel de Jesús Jiménez project.

During trial, evidence presented by the Prosecutor’s Office corroborated that Araya used time alone with the girls to abuse and rape them.

Last October, the mother of the children realized what was happening with her daughters, so she filed a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office, where the arrest of the man was ordered.

The sentence was issued on Tuesday May 7, 2019, in the Criminal Courts of Cartago, but was not made known until yesterday (Monday).

The three judge panel imposed a penalty of 58 years in prison, but the penalty was reduced to 24 years.

Araya was also immediately remanded in custody where he will remain while the sentence is expected to be final.
