Your smartphone could help you avoid a collision with the train in San José. That is the objective of an “app” that is being created by the BAC San José and the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer).

Miguel Carabaguíaz, president of the railway, says that the app developed by the bank will tie to the GPS data of the Incofer to locate their trains on a map.

“When the train is reaching an intersection, the app will activate an alarm to warn the driver of the train ahead. The app will sound like the train whistle. It is for prevention”, explained Carabaguíaz.

The app is expected to be available in two months time.

So far this year the Policia de Tránsito reports 17 collisions –  an average of one a week – between the commuter train and a vehicle. The majority of the incidents occurred in San Pedro.
