QCOSTARICA — On Wednesday, former president Carlos Alvarado (2018-2022), said he was confident in his ability to defeat populism in the 2018 elections, but unfortunately populism is still thriving today.

For the former president, populism threatens the country’s democratic institutions.

“Defeating populism electorally was not going to make it disappear and, as we know, today it not only thriving but has perfected its ability to weaken the institutions of democracy – such as the judiciary, the press, and the control bodies – and to polarize us (…) It shocks me how, confronted with their lies or open falsehoods, public figures do not feel ashamed, retract or at least apologize,” said Alvarado

Alvarado, in his statement to the press, stressed that drug trafficking is a common enemy that must unite us, above all, because it is growing out of control.

The former president made the statements during the unveiling of his portrait in the Legislative Assembly.
