COSTA RICA NEWS – Construction to complete the Circunvalación (ring road around San José) will begin in February 2015, says the director of the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) – the national roads authority , Cristian Vargas.
The construction from La Uruca to Ruta 32 will close the north portion of the ring, connecting the various cities and communities to San José.
Vargas explained that the construction for the 2.7 kilomeTres of road will include two intersections and bridge over the Rivera creek and cost US$141 million dollars.
According to Vargas, the contract was awarded to the Hernan Solís – La Estrella consortium. The Contraloría General de la República (Comptroller General) has endorsed the contract and the work order is expected to be issued in the third week in July, with work starting six months later.
The director said that the contract includes the design of 4 kilometres of the Circunvalación, but only 2.7 km for the construction. The remaining construction is delayed due to relocation problems of the the Triángulo de la Solidaridad shantytown, that must be completed before the government can award the contract for the remaIning 1.3 Kms of road construction.
The completion of the Circunvalación is an important public works project that will relieve traffic congestion in San José centre.
