Costa Rica’s government said it defers to Chile, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and member states on how to proceed with the United Nations global climate change summit, COP25.

Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said the country will not be able to host the conference, scheduled for December, amid riots, arson and protests over inequality. Chile also withdrew from hosting an APEC trade summit in November.

Costa Rica’s Environment and Energy Minister Carlos Manuel Rodriguez said in a statement that the country was in talks with Chile and would support decisions to quickly find a successful alternative.

The United Nations confirmed Friday the meeting will take place in Madrid in December after Chile’s withdrawal.

The conference was planned for to be held in Brazil this mor=nth (November 2019), but newly-elected President Jair Bolsonaro announced his country’s withdrawal of an offer to host in November 2018, citing economic reasons. Then Chile stepped up and became the new host, but social unrest in the lead up to the meeting forced it late October 2019 to withdraw from hosting.

Then by mutual agreement between the UN, Chile, and Spain, the latter became the new host.

In early October Costa Rica hosted the Precop25 conference, the most important climate change event in the world, with the participation of delegates from across the world gathering in the country to discuss climate change.
