QCOSTARICA – Costa Rican industry association (Asociación Cámara de Infocomunicación y Tecnología – Infocom) has filed a complaint against the country’s Superintendency of Telecommunications (Sutel) on the grounds that the watchdog is overstepping its powers, reports local daily CRHoy.
According to Infocom, which represents the interests of operators such as Claro, Movistar and state-owned ICE, the watchdog is habitually laying down regulations that should only be set out by the board of the Regulatory Authority for Public Services (ARESEP).
The complaint filed to the country’s contentious-administrative court follows severe criticism of Sutel’s allegedly outdated practices from ICE, which earlier this year claimed discriminatory treatment by the watchdog.
In addition, politicians from Costa Rica’s left-leaning Frente Amplio party have submitted a proposal to remove Sutel’s control of the National Telecommunications Fund (Fonatel).
