Q COSTA RICA — Costa Rica commemorated Día de la Persona Negra y la Cultura Afrocostarricense (Black People’s Day and Afro-Costa Rican Culture Day) on Monday, August 31st, a date officially established by law that recognizes the heritage, legacy, and contributions of the Afro-descendant population to the national identity.
One of the main centers of the celebration was the province of Limón, where the Grand Gala Parade 2026 wound through the streets of the central canton starting at 11:30 a.m., accompanied by calypso music, dance troupes, traditional costumes, and cultural activities. Some families even arrived hours early to secure a spot along the parade route.
The event transformed downtown Limón into a showcase of Afro-Caribbean culture, with the participation of residents from the province and visitors from other parts of the country. The program also included gastronomy, art, and social gatherings, while the parade once again solidified its position as one of the most visible symbols of this national commemoration.
The celebration is also part of the Historical Month of Afro-descendants, officially declared in Costa Rica, and seeks not only to celebrate the cultural richness of this population but also to highlight its historical, social, and economic contributions to the country.
