COSTA RICA NEWS — The Solis administration says that it is no longer an issue whether a new refinery will be built, but rather they are analyzing “whether or not it will work” doing it with China.

RECOPE is the state refinery that, well, refines nothing, It buys finished product to resell to gasoline operators.

The government of Luis Guillermo Solis has made it clear that it believes a new oil refinery needs to be built, for which it had signed a contract with the Chinese government, who will fund the work.

Now, having said that the agreement made with China should be respected, the Ministro de la Presidencia (Chief of Staff), Melvin Jiménez,  notes that “…We need a refinery … ” but ” …We want to see whether or not it will work if we do it with China and if not, we will find someone else. ”

Crhoy.com reports that “… according to Jimenez … what they want to analyze is whether it is feasible to carry on with the Chinese deal with or find a new option.

This is the mission to which they sent Sara Salazar, executive president of the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (Recope) and Environment Minister Edgar Gutierrez to go China, to hold meetings with the government and the company that was originally going build the mega project, China Engeenering Harbour Company (CHEC). ”
