COSTA RICA NEWS — Unemployment was 10% in the third quarter of 2014, reported the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC) – National Institute of Statistics and Census, this morning. In total, 224,403 people were out of work.
In the same period last year, the unemployment rate was 9%, one point less.
According to the data, unemployment was up in the construction sector, over the same period last year, with some 26.000 more unemployed in the third quarter of 2014 that in the third quarter in 2013.
“With regard to unemployment, 228,000 people were in this situation for the third quarter of 2014, of which 117,000 were men and 111,000 were women. The unemployment rate nationwide was 10.0 %. For men, unemployment was 8.4% and women 12.4%, with no statistically significant changes compared to the same period of 2013 change,” said the INEC report.
With respect to “informal” employment, the employment rate reached 43% in the third quarter of this year.
Informal worker is comprised of people with salaries but not enrolled in the social security (CCSS or Caja) by their employers, self-employed and employees of employers with unregistered business (not listed in the National Property Registry and with no formal accounting).
