The Government of El Salvador asked Australia for “temporary visas” for rural farmers to work in that country and thus prevent more Salvadorans from deciding to migrate illegally to the United States.

The head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Rolando Castro, told reporters this past week, that “efforts are being made with the Australian Consulate in the country to achieve temporary work visas.”

“We are knocking on the door of the Australian Consulate to guarantee more opportunities for our farmers,” Castro said.

According to the official, the and the Ministry of Labor and the Australian Consulate will “soon” sign an agreement.

The Government of El Salvador has already applied for work visas to the United States but have met with little success. They are also in talks with the Canadian Embassy, trying to boost legal migration to Canada, EFE reports.

Among the reasons that motivate illegal migration in El Salvador are the search for better living conditions, family reunification and violence.

Up to last March, the Trump Administration, had deported 3,718 Salvadorans of legal age, 8.9% higher than those registered in the first three months of 2018.
