The Caribbean coast continues to be battered by heavy rain and winds, affecting daily life in the province of Limón and parts of Turrialba.

The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – national emergency commission – has declared a “green” alert.

Areas like Pococí, Guácimo, Matina, Siquirres, Sarapiquí and Turrialba, where rising water levels in the rivers and creeks has caused flooding of many homes and affecting tens of thousands.

The CNE reports that in Guácimo, Pococí and Sarapiquí, the hardest hit, some 16 communities are isolated due to damage to roads and bridges.

The emergency has forced the CNE into action to prevent further flooding, set up shelters and distribute food, water and basic needs. In some areas, pollution of wells is a major concern.

The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) – national weather service – says that the wet conditions will continue today and tomorrow (Sunday) in the Caribbean and Northern zone.
